The extra hour

For someone currently stuck in insomniac mood, it's a killer. Because I seem to be having my extra hour betwixt 4 and 5. Yesterday it would have been 5 and 6. Far more civilised. I will spend the day whinging!

We watched a truly heartwarming film ( NOT! ) last night. Called The wee man, based on the true story of Paul Ferris and gang warfare in Glasgow. Left nothing to the imagination. Brutal.

Tea was sausage casserole, mashed potatoes and Savoy cabbage. It was delicious as we've not had it in months. I do laugh though as I have to scrape off all the casseroley bits for Mr 19! He is so fussy sometimes. He doesn't do gravy either. I often wonder if he was switched at birth.

I'm on the cusp of revealing a show and tell. Hopefully I'll make enough progress today with it to get my 'Tah-darrrh' moment. However, how the flipping heck I'll show you will be tricksy. I'm writing this on the web and the add photo link is a bit useless on the iPad. My trusty Blogger App seems to have gone Tits up. I'm sure I'll work my way around it. When I click the photo button and add photos from my phone, it only brings up photos from months ago! In fact I just tried it now and the whole thing froze! Useless.

If I could post a photo, it would be of Sir Freddie Holmes. Miss 22 has bought the puppy a new coat, in what can be only described as a deerstalker style. He looks super snug and cute in it. He's grown so much. He looks more or less like a grown up dog. He's coming for his week's holiday on Thursday night.

I baked. For the first time in forever. I made a double batch of Aunty Olives. Half I made traditional and the other half, I added flour to make it less wet, I also added stem ginger chopped up and a glut of the syrup from the jar. These made thicker, slightly softer biscuits but still delicious! I can't take a photo to show you as they didn't last very long.

I did a stock take of my Tin cupboard. You should be grateful I can't add photos right now because I'd be treating you to a shot of it! Without copying down the whole inventory, I have about 15 tins of soup in, 8 tins of tomatoes, 8 tins of beans and a whole list of tinned pulses I must have bought when I was feeling wholesome. The top shelf is for sweet stuff. 4 tins of condensed milk! Might go down to three today if I make some millionaires shortbread! Loads of tinned fruit and evaporated milk. ( Sunday tea pudding from my childhood ), some mincemeat, jam and emergency rice pudding! Can you believe I'm chatting away about tinned food. I think there's a lot of snobbery about using tinned and frozen food. But it's all good stuff, preserved at its best!

The reason I cleaned out my tin cupboard is because of a dream I had. This weekhere has been TWO programmes on about flipping Edible Dormice. ( What did the Romans ever do for us???? ) Think one was the ITV version of Countryfile and the other Autumnwatch. Both told the viewers of how they are vermin and pest controllers are having more and more call outs to homes because of them. My dream was that I was over run with mice. The Tin cupboard was the only one not to be cleaned out in Summer. I had to check. But I had no evidence of mice, edible or not!

I'm looking forward to watching the new TV programme tonight about Britain's first woman serial killer. The trailers look good. It was dark enough yesterday for lighted candles in the daytime. Dark nights are perfect for cosy sofa viewing. The only good thing about the dark. Readers of this blog from the beginning - if there are any originals out there - will know me by now and how I hate the dark mornings and dark nights with a passion. I much prefer the Summer. Although I'm glad it's colder though I've yet to wear a coat. The heaviest I've gone is a denim jacket. I've only had to pop the heating on a couple of times as it's often colder inside my house than outside!

It's now 5.26am ( 6.26 really ) so I'm thinking about getting up and having a brew. I'm thinking too now, which IS the real time? Did we fettle with the clocks to put them on or back? Just what time IS it??  Does it really make that much difference? Really????

Lots of love from

Rachel *hates dark mornings* Radiostar xxx

  1. I'm awake and up too. Dear husband is going for a bike ride at seven and forgot about the clocks! Grrr! If it wasn't so early I'd be cleaning out my cupboard as well. You've got me thinking now....
I'm looking forward to seeing some pictures when you get them sorted. My printer is currently out of action, so you have my sympathies about things not working right. It could be another candle day for you today. Off to put the kettle on. Xx

    1. Blooming printers do my head in. Always needing ink replaced and then never printing when you want them too. Bloody things!

  2. IT's an hour later now but I feel for you. It hasn't really bothered me as an early bird with erratic waking times.

Tins are brilliant! Wouldn't be without them!

  4. I too am awake at 5am, everyday. So today at least it was a bit different and was showing 4am! Harry is trying to grasp the concept. He's extremely clever but even he asked why it needs to happen, time is just time !

  5. Hope you don't have too much trouble filling the extra hour and can sleep tonight. I don't like gravy either, but I do like sausage casserole, but I don't add any gravy to it, just a tin of tomatoes and a tin of beans - or other pulses! - to make a sauce. A good way to use some tins!

  6. Like you I really hate dark mornings and dark afternoons evening and find these winter months a real struggle...yes we could say that the mornings are now 'lighter' (at least for a while) but for those of us that wake up at stupid am hours, it is even earlier!

I need to sort through my cupboards as well, things seem to have become piled haphazardly!

    1. Well funny you should say that! I was mentally thinking about the floods last year and thinking I could do with some tins of ham and corned beef in extra too!

  8. I'm a bit of a food hoarder, too. We could probably survive for a while on what's in the pantry. No mice, here either but it's funny how a dream prompted you to take inventory and tidy things up. I'll bet Freddie looks very grown up in his coat! -Jenn

Your tin cupboard could be my tin cupboard......I keep pretty much the same in mine along with tuna, sweetcorn, corned beef and a couple of those disgusting Fray Bentos pies for Andy who loves them and is welcome to them.
I'm with Mr 19 on the gravy thing.....I'm not over fond either.
Can't wait for your Show and Tell :)-x-

    1. The HG is too a Fray Bentos fan! I must get a couple in. I had 8 tins of tuna and 3 tins of sweetcorn in - they sometimes get taken for fishing!!
You are now the third person in my life I know who doesn't like gravy! Why??!!!
Show and tell being processed right now!

  10. It was 2am before I got to sleep last night - no idea what all that was about. I set my phone alarm for 10am thinking 9am would be a decent time to get up but of course being the technophobe I am didn't realise the phone would change automatically, so I didn't get up til 10am after all.

We've seen that film. I'm a massive fan of British films. I love the s***ty nitty gritty of them and the humour even if it's on the dark side.

Tinned fruit is lovely. Peaches, mandarins and pears are my favourite. At least with all your tins you'll be OK when the Russians come!

Hope you have a better night. Enjoy your week off. xx

    1. I love tinned fruit too!
Mandarins are always used for meringues or flans. Never in a dish with carnation for pud. That job goes to pears or peaches! The HG won't eat fresh pears or peaches but will eat tinned. Goes without saying he prefers them in the syrup rather than the juice!

  11. Hope you sleep better tonight, Rachel. Back to school for us tomorrow so I'm almost guaranteed a bad night so that I can be doubly grumpy tomorrow!

What are Aunty Olives? If they don't have flour in, they would be good to try (have to avoid wheat and rye these days as it makes me poorly). I did google it but nothing sensible came up!

    1. Ah Helen,
Aunty Olive's are ginger biscuits. I thought I'd blogged about them but I couldn't find the post. I really should add labels!
The HG mum had a beloved Aunty Olive. She was brought up by her for a while and remained a dear part of the family. She baked the most amazing gingernuts and I finally got the recipe! I treated it as though it was an heirloom secret recipe! However, I bet she got it from the Bero book or some such!
I have shared the recipe before and those who have it refer to the biscuits, as do I, as Aunty Olive's!
They do have SR Flour in them but I'm sure they'd work with a gluten free wheat alternative. I've never tried actually.
      Good luck at school today!

  12. oh dear. And there's me constantly banging on about loving cold weather, dark nights, cosy winter, and candles.
You've done lots of nice cooking stuff there, you need to come round here and do some for me. I seem to have lost my cooking/baking mojo, but I'm trying to get it back.

Snobbery about tinned food? Snobbery about bloody everything on the internet right now. Getting heartedly disheartened. Seems whenever someone has the nerve to enjoy something, someone has to poo poo it. Just read the first 'Full of Misery Anti Christmas I think Everyone is a Moron I hate Christmas' blog post, and am annoyed with myself for even clicking on the blog in the first place. I know what to expect, so why do I bother.

Off to sit in a dark corner with a candle xxxx

p.s crapping school again today. Honestly, school hols are far too short and far too quick!
