Sunny May

I love waking up to these light mornings. I think May is my favourite month, the garden looks great. For the past few years, I’ve thought it is a shame we don’t have the 6 weeks holidays in May and June. I’ve actually thought, I’m more than ready for my permanent 6 week holiday from work!

Anyway, the outside is good for my soul.  I’ve been busy weeding, have finally re potted some things that were begging me to finally do it! I am pleased to announce that I have TWO honeyberries so far on my first blueberry bush. Sadly though the lack of rain is affecting my rhubarb. I’m saving water and that gets first drink.

Hanging basket woes.

So I mixed manure and compost and some topsoil. Filled it, thinking last year’s liner would be ok. Planted it up. Watered it and watched in dismay as every drop of water dripped right through - the patch of parched grass beneath didn’t complain . But, as Joy wrote the other day, I nipped out to do a little bit of gardening at 9am and after 5 minutes it was 2pm! I’d swept and tidied everything up. So I silently said a few bad swear words and declared I’d re do it another day.

The next day, I unplanted , unfilled, and re lined the hanging basket. Refilled, replanted and re watered. To my extreme annoyance , not as effing watertight as I’d reasoned.

So feeling vexed, I left it again. The day after I watered it a little and not much drippage. So watering will be sporadic. If it looks like the plants are not fairing well. I will replant in a tub and the hanging basket will be evicted! It’s hanging from a branch on my bay tree and pleases me greatly so fingers crossed. It’s got a pale pink and white fuschia in the middle. A purple flower like a daisy  and a white lobelia called sparkling white, and two purple petunias - a double one called tumbelina - which if I’m honest, I did buy just for the name !!! They were all from my local Spar shop which does have a really good reasonable selection of bedding plants and re done tubs and baskets. My plants were £3 each

Edit - it’s now 31st May and the basket looks good.

Double Edit it’s not July 25th and the basket is over flowing

Will be back with a post soon!
