This coin in my hand is 800 years old. Eight hundred. That blows my mind a bit. I wonder who else held it and spent it?
It's silver and it's hammered. King Henry ii minted in Carlisle. The HG found it on his very first foray into Metal Detecting. He went with my Dad. Other detectorists were very jealous that he'd found it on his first dig! He found it on a dig in Hawick, Scotland.
In the craft room, there is this on the table.
This is the back panel of a top I'm making for me. I bought the material from the Shuttle for pennies. I showed you it months and months ago. Well, it's a right bugger to work with! It's silky jersey. So I've my walking foot on the machine and ball point needle. What threw me was I always thought and did cut patterns right sides facing. So that's what I did. Good job I re read the pattern. Right sides together. Now it'd taken me eleventy billion minutes to lay on the paper pieces, so I spent ages over a cup of tea trying to figure out if I could get away with cutting right sides facing. Trying to mentally turn over pieces. That was too taxing for my little brain. So, no, out came the pins and we re folded with much swearing as it slipped and slided all over the shop! My stitching is a bit wonky but the time I sat down to sew my nerves were a bit frazzled and it's lucky it's not been made into fancy dusters! So far I've only seen the back panel together!!! We will see how we get on next week!

The fabric reminds me of Art Deco but I'm less than impressed with the garment so far!

ReplyDeleteThe fabric sounds very tricksy but that top will be gorgeous when it's done. I think if I was using a slippy fabric I would try my quilting clips or even hair clips to hold the edges of the fabric while I pinned the pattern on.
Lucky HG finding the coin on his very first dig. We used to have some friends that lived in Hawick.
46 children left in school...lol....Ruby's school has less than that everyday but then it is just a teeny tiny village school.

DeleteI really enjoyed sewing years ago, but the crawling around on the floor, pinning pattern pieces, and cutting them out was the worst part! You brought back memories of right sides facing, or right sides together! Do you lay your fabric out on the floor, or do you have a table? -Jenn

DeleteCan't believe it's half term already. The lady who hosts pur we knitting/chatting class reminded us it would be off on Monday and everyone asked why! She's probably nit stopped swearing yet about all thes eretired folk who don't know what day of the week it is!! I might ask the others if they want to come to mine where there will be no pretence of knitting-it will be cake and chatting. Enjoy whatever you have planned-at least there will be no smelly, boaking, complaining weans in it!! Catriona

DeleteWhat a fascinating find by HG. Was it on farm land? I'm digging a new vegetable plot on a bit of pasture land and I keep hoping to unearth a Saxon hoard (but Roman would do too). So far just the odd half brick and a rusty iron bracket.
ReplyDeleteIt was on farm land. The Metal Detecting club pay a fee to the farmer, who is basically getting his field turned over for profit!!

I'd have no chance trying to work out your pattern dilema. I cannot invert my brain at all. My car reversing proves this 100%. It's a sight to behold!
How can you be on half term - you only just went back?! Thomas has another week to go. It was all drama at school yesterday. The other Y6 class was evacuated onto the field because a boy kicked off big style. Teachers hit, chairs thrown, desks turned over. The mind boggles. You know what he's like, well he went off this morning with an escape route planned just in case there was a repeat performance and he got caught up in it. Bless him. xx
It's becoming more and more common and the mum in me has one opinion and professional me has another. The main question is to ask, why is this child so angry? ( professional me ) you can get your bottom dollar something isn't right at home. I ALWAYS ALWAYS blame the parents and the parenting lol and I've seen our worst offenders come from highly paid professional middle class parents whose ineffective parenting is to blame because really it's just spoilt brat syndrome poorly managed. The others come from the worst kind of Jeremy Kyle guest fodder.

DeleteWow that coin, what a find.. I 'd have been ecstatic all those years old.. and slippery material, been there and only a couple of years ago. My grand daughter wanted a dress for her prom and bought the silk red fabric herself. It wasn't easy but it ended up beautiful,

ReplyDeleteyour sewing is too complicated for me. I'd lose patience Between you and me, I messed up my sewing machine by losing my temper with it. I yanked the fabric out in a huff after it had got all bunched up for the millionth time, and it sort of kind of broke it. It had to be repaired by a proper repair person, and cost a fortune. Then I went and used gold thread a year or two ago and messed it up all over again. I am too impatient and bad tempered to do tricky sewing like you, so I am full of awe.
Yey to half term. I love half term at this time of year, we can stay in and get all cosy. Total bliss. And it was a pd day on Friday, which was even better!xx
