Things I was denied...

When I was growing up  into my early teenage years I was denied lots of things! For my own good! It's no wonder I'm a prudey Victorian type!!

1. Grange Hill
I was NEVER allowed to watch this as it was deemed far too unsuitable! This was when it was Tucker and Tricia ( how glam was she?! ) Thanks Google Images!
We were never allowed to watch TV at tea time, having to eat in the kitchen at the table. If my mum heard the theme tune she'd swoop in and turn it off or over and I could watch How or Magpie!
I did watch it in the Zammo years when I was a bit older and Mum was at work!! How naughty of me! But I've never done drugs! Just say No!

2. Jackie
This magazine was far too racy. Full of sluts and nonsense! Eventually after years of Bunty
I was allowed Blue Jeans
Oh thanks Google - I had this one as Martin Kemp was MY one true love and I had this frieze on my wall!
A much tamer version. None of the models in the photo stories ever got close to kissing and such like! Imagine if she knew I was reading Just 17 !!! That was VERY informative 0_o
I also remember buying the very first edition of Smash Hits magazine! I just had a quick look on google - I wish I'd kept them all! Could make a fortune on eBay! My mum of course wanted me to get Look In! Wasn't it great singing a long to the Top 49 on a Sunday night with the right song lyrics!! ( Then doing that whole taping thing - trying to decide when to take your finger off the pause button to cut the DJ off! )
3. Peddle pushers.
No reason given. ( Truthfully mum couldn't afford such faddy things) so I just used to borrow my cousins when I was a perma fixture there aged about 11. I did have a RaRa skirt though. But it was a three tiered knee length one, not the shorter one tier frilly one I wanted. AND my little sisters had the same one as me too. VERY uncool!
4. High heels
As the oldest I had to wait til I was 15 till I got my first pair, my little sister got her first pair at 12. Oh the injustice of it all!

Just a random little post! I've two iced mince pies left. It's half term tomorrow. Things I found in my kitchen last night: THEO!! He'd escaped again!! I nearly had a fit when I went in last thing before bed and saw something furry scuttling along the floor. Took my brain a few seconds to register it was him and OMFG not a mouse! He was scooped up by me and put back!

Off to take the boy to Karate!
Lots of love from
Rachel * singing Just Say No ( NO ), just say No* Radiostar xx

  1. Oh you do make me laugh *wipes away tear*. I wasn't allowed to watch Jaws when it was everywhere and by the time I was it was no big deal :o( I remember Tucker but have no recollection at all of that girl :o) I also wasn't allowed to wear my very shiny red shoes to (primary) school, so I put them in my bag in secret and put them on when I got there :o) Well done on rationing your mince pies. Most Impressed I am. And Thank Goodness you found Theo! How had he managed to escape? XXX

    1. Miss 21 hadn't clipped his cage back together after she'd had him out earlier in the evening, so he could have been roaming for hours!! I laughed at you taking your red shoes in! It's like rolling up your skirt at the waistband the minute you shut the front door on the way to secondary school!

  3. oh what a blast from my fabulous past!
I loved Grange Hill. My mum wouldn't have dared stop me from watching it, but in fairness to her, it gave her a bit of peace while I watched it. I loved Trisha and Cathy!
Bunty was the only comic I had delivered, and I'd rush home from school to get it, but it was never there. My older BROTHER used to pinch it and read it first, God he was annoying. I liked Jackie, but those stupid picture stories were so annoying!

I used to walk around in my bright pink ra-ra skirt, red shoe boots, Mary Quant t-shirt (flowers on the front, from Littlewoods), dodgy perm with blonde fringe, and my mahoosive sterio. I was totally the bees knees!

    I miss the 80's.

That just say No song is forever embedded in my brain!

Thanks for the glorious memories :O) x

    1. I am LAUGHING at the perm and blonde fringe!! I have naturally dark dark brown/black hair and surprise surprise I wasn't allowed to dye it, so in the summer I managed to turn my fringe a delightful shade of bright orange using some illicit 'Sun-in' at my best friend's house! Then used red food colouring to dye it pink! How vair vair stylish!!

    2. don't laugh at my perm & blonde fringe! I looked great. So good that absolutely no photos exist of it whatsoever! Ah, sun-in, there's another blast from the past. Your pink fringe would be quite fashionable right now, maybe you should do it again! ;o)

    1. We used to go on 'holiday' to my Mum's cousins and they were NEVER allowed to watch ITV. The dad wouldn't allow it. BBC only. We found it a bit odd but to be honest we weren't even bothered! Too busy having a good outsidey, museumy, picnicking time to watch TV!

  6. AT least you had a TV!!! I never had one until I got married. My father wouldn't have a TV in the house it was radio or read books! We were allowed comics and we usually managed to find old albums in the jumble sales so I read plenty of Rupert Bear and Bunty. In a way I have to thank my father for not allowing us to have a TV because I had and still have a passion for reading and of course I had plenty of time then for my crochet. Great memories though!!!!

    keep well

  7. Oh I liked this post, it took me right down memory lane. I could watch Grange Hill but like you no TV at meal times. It was always a sit down at the table family affair. Definitely no trays on knees in front of the tele. I was an avid Jackie reader but had forgotten about Just 17. No Bunty for me but I did have Twinkle and loved the Nurse Nancy stories. Laughed out loud at taping the top 40, forgotten I used to do that as well. I was the eldest of 4 and always felt I paved the way for the others as they seemed to be able to do things a lot younger than I did. Great post xx

    1. I remember getting Twinkle when I was really small and adored Nurse Nancy! I was going to open a Doll's hospital when I grew up! Ha! I bet you got 'done' too, just because "You should know better"!!!!

    2. There was only 13 months between me and my brother and 27 months between me and my sister but yes, 'you're the eldest, you should know better' was a given if I did anything wrong lol. xx

  10. Great post. Dad used to work shifts so when he was on afternoons mum let us (my and my three younger brother) watch the telly otherwise if dad was in we weren't allowed the telly on until the 6 o'clock news. I read Jackie and Blue Jeans; I loved them magazines. I too listened to radio 1 and tape my favourite tunes. Some kids at high school would tape the whole thing and bring it in to listen to a break. I was a big Bay City Roller fan and really reeeeeally wanted the trousers, shirt or scarf to wear around my wrist but wasn't allowed.

  11. Memory Lane is a wonderful place for a stroll, I had Bunty and Rupert annuals and my dad had The Beano comic. My Mum had Red Letter passed on from my godmother. We had a telly but it was rationed, I watched Mr Ed, Twizzle and Torchy and of course there was Larry the Lamb and Muffin the Mule, but never t meal times. There was No Hiding Place, Armchair Theatre, The Billy cotton Band Show, The Black and White Minstrels and Sunday Night at the London Palladium. I never saw Grange Hill, by then I was married and we hardly seemed to watch TV at all.

  12. My mum brought my 1st pair of nice shoes when I was 14, I loved her for them, and felt great, UNTIL, my 12 year old sister came in wearing the same design, NEVER forgot!. I loved Jackie, and Fab 208. Great post xxx

  13. Snorting lots at the escapee in the kitchen! I vaguely remember Grange Hill being rationed when I was a child but I do not remember Blue Jeans magazine. I had Look In & then progressed onto Jackie magazine (only because my parents didn't know the contents) xx
